Manipal buys 87% in Kolkata hospital chain for Rs 1,400 crore

Manipal Hospitals, the second-largest healthcare provider in India, has entered into an agreement to acquire an 87% stake in Medica Synergie, a hospital chain based in Kolkata. While the financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, sources informed TOI that the deal is estimated to be worth Rs 1,400 crore.

Following the acquisition of Medica, Manipal Hospitals will serve 7 million patients annually across 37 hospitals in 19 cities. The addition of Medica has increased the number of hospital beds from 9,500 to over 10,500. Two recent acquisitions - Medica Synergie and AMRI - have positioned Manipal Hospitals as the largest hospital chain in eastern India, focusing on tertiary and quaternary healthcare.

In a recent development, Manipal Hospitals acquired an 84% stake in AMRI (Advanced Medical Research Institute) Hospitals, also based in Kolkata, for Rs 2,400 crore. Dilip Jose, MD, and CEO of Manipal Hospitals, said, "With this acquisition, Manipal Hospitals builds on its strong presence in Eastern India, enabling us to expand our reach and meet the healthcare needs of this under-served region."
